Thiruvananthapuram: Experts in the field say that there are 60 million gout patients in the country, but this is not considered as a major non-communicable disease at the government level. The experts gave their opinion in a seminar on diseases like diabetes, blood pressure and heart disease which are a challenge to health which was held as part of the Global Ayurveda Festival.
Arvind Chopra, Chair, Public Health and Epidemiology, Ministry of AYUSH, said that a national survey on musculoskeletal pain identified 0.32 percent of people suffering from arthritis. It affects 60 million people in India. Many people with gout do not seek medical help until it reaches a severe level, he said.
