Global conclave stresses for ties among nations for growth of traditional medicines

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Foreign delegates at the Global Ayurveda Festival (GAF-2023) said that the growth of traditional medicine sector requires mutual cooperation and partnership between countries. The matter was discussed at the GAF International Cooperation Conference at Greenfield International Stadium, Kariyavattam.
Gaya Kanchana, Secretary to the Minister of State for Indigenous Medicine and MD of Ayurveda Drug Corporation said that Sri Lanka is ready to join hands with India for research and development purposes in the field of Ayurveda. Gaya Kanchana invited pharmaceutical companies in the region to tap into Sri Lanka's indigenous pharma market. Gaya Kanchana said that the government will provide all facilities for drug factories and Ayurvedic hospitals. India's work in spearheading great discoveries in the field of Ayurveda is commendable. Evidence-based research is needed to take Ayurveda to greater heights in modern times. He added that the indigenous system of medicine in Sri Lanka and the Ayurvedic system of medicine in Kerala are very similar.
Peter Hobwani, Deputy Ambassador at the Embassy of the Republic of Zimbabwe, said the challenge facing Africa in this area is to develop and mainstream traditional medicine. Traditional medicine has a crucial role to play in the future of medicine. He said that Zimbabwe has already accepted India's leadership in this regard and has signed a memorandum of understanding with India in this area.
Lasha Japaridze, CDA at the Embassy of Georgia said that India is the flag bearer of the advancement of traditional medicine around the world. Awareness campaigns about Ayurveda are going on in Georgia. He informed that he is collaborating with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India and a memorandum of understanding is under consideration for cooperation in this field.
Apart from those serving in hospitals in India, a large number of people from Fiji are visiting India for Ayurvedic treatment, said Elia Sevutia, Second Secretary, High Commission of the Republic of Fiji in New Delhi.
GAF Working Chairman Dr. GG Gangadharan and Dr. P. M. Warrier, Managing Trustee of Kottakal Arya Vaidyasala were present.
Switzerland, which officially recognized Ayurveda in 2009, is the only country that has included Ayurveda in its constitution, Dr. Dr. Charles Eli Nicoleret said. He was speaking in a session on 'Regulatory Aspects in Different Countries'. Dr. India can make a great contribution to the world through Ayurveda and Switzerland can be considered as the gateway of Ayurveda to Europe. Nicolette said.
Dr. Sintija Sousa, a complementary medicine researcher at the University of Latvia, said that educational courses on Ayurveda have been started in Latvia in collaboration with AYUSH.
There are more than 630 traditional healers in the UAE, of which 209 are Ayurvedic practitioners, said Dr. Saifullah Khalid Adamji said. Ayurveda has gained increasing acceptance in the UAE. The UAE government has opened 18 centers in India, including two in Kerala, to conduct qualifying examinations for doctors to work in the UAE. He added that the UAE and Saudi Arabia have relaxed laws and regulations on traditional medicine.
Dr. Ayurveda of Nutriconnect in Australia said that Ayurveda is a growing treatment system in the Western world. Dilip Ghosh said. The global market for herbal medicines is expected to reach $120 billion by 2023. Whereas the current value of the Indian herbal market is 50 billion. This represents an annual growth of around 14 percent, he said.
Head of Traditional Indian Medicine in Germany Dr. Syal Kumar, Dr. Bliss Ayurveda Nitin Aggarwal, Prof, University of Transdisciplinary Health Science and Technology; Dr. P. M. Unnikrishnan also spoke.
GAF is organized by various Ayurvedic organizations of Kerala under the joint auspices of the Center for Innovation in Science and Social Action, the Union Ministry of AYUSH and the Government of Kerala. The theme of GAF is 'Emerging Challenges in Healthcare and Ayurveda with New Energy'.
